On Saturday March 19, Hafthor Bjornsson, known to many as “The Mountain” in Game of Thrones, will take part in a boxing match. Inside the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Stadium, Bjornsson will be looking to end his rivalry with compatriot Eddie Hall.

Who exactly is Bjornsson?

One of the strongest men in the world, “Thor” is known for his large physique and imposing will. The size difference he has when paired with other athletes is otherworldly. Former UFC champion Conor McGregor fought him once, and he looked like a flyweight going up against a super heavyweight.

Who is Hafthor Bjornsson?

Born in Iceland, Bjornsson was a center for several Division I basketball teams. He even played for the Icelandic national team in 2006. In 2010, however, Bjornsson found he could move up to competition as a what a strong man.

Bjornsson has placed first in Iceland’s Strongest Man contest for ten consecutive years and has won Iceland’s Strongest Man contest five times.

Things kicked into high gear when he won the Arnold Strongman Classic three years in a row, Europe’s Strongest Man five times and Giants Live four times. He became only the second person to win the Arnold Classic three times. In 2015, Bjornsson broke a 1,000-year-old record by hauling a 33-foot, 1,430-pound log five paces.

In 2020, Bjornsson lifted 1,105 pounds at his gym in Iceland. This broke the record set by Eddie Hall in 2016, and Hall has since challenged the record due to where it took place.

Actor

Outside of strongman contests, Bjornsson has appeared in a few TV shows and movies. He played Gregor “The Mountain” Clegane in recent seasons of Game of Thrones. The character was feared by many. Bjornsson also appeared in the movie Kickboxer: Retaliation.

Bjornsson will play Thorir the Proud in The Northman.
