Weightlifter Padma Shree Smt. Karnam Malleswari Presents Top Prize at CIL Inter-Company Championship

NEW DELHI- Weightlifter Padma Shree Smt. Karnam Malleswari, the first Indian woman to win a medal at the Olympics, bestowed the highest awards during the closing ceremony of the “Inter-Company Powerlifting, Weightlifting and Bodybuilding Championship – 2022” at Coal India Headquarters ltd. in Kolkata on Wednesday.

Sri. SN Tiwary, Director (Marketing) – CIL & Shri. B. Veera Reddy, Director (Technical) – CIL were present on the occasion.

Coal India subsidiary Western Coalfields Ltd. (WCL) secured the winner position and South-Eastern Coalfields Ltd. (SECL) secured the championship runner-up position.

Smt. Sumita Laha of Coal India Hq. landed the title of “Strong Woman of Coal India” while Shri. PK Pradhan of Mahanadi Coalfields Ltd. (MCL) won the title of “Strong Man of Coal India”. Sri. SECL’s Vishal Kashyap won the title of “Best Coal Lifter in India” and Shri. Tirtha Gopal Bhandari of Eastern Coalfields Ltd. (ECL) was crowned “Mr. Coal from India”.

Speaking on the occasion, Smt. Malleswari praised Coal India for organizing such a great sporting event for its employees. She said sport makes us strong physically and mentally and with greater availability of infrastructure and coaching, budding Indian sports talents can do wonders in national and international events.

Sri. Vijay Munishwar, the “Dronacharya Lifetime Awardee” and Civil Engineer working in Coal India subsidiary WCL, received the Lifetime Achievement Award for his contribution in promoting Para Powerlifting in India.

This three-day championship started on 25th April 2022 in which more than 200 participants from across Coal India Ltd. headquarters. & its subsidiaries and The Singareni Collieries Company Ltd. (SCCL) participated to win the titles of 33 sporting events.
