Remembering bodybuilder Andreas Frey’s career amid sudden death
Bodybuilder Andreas Frey died suddenly on October 20, 2022. He was 43 years old. HITC looks at his family life, alongside his bodybuilding legacy as a former champion.
The bodybuilding community lost an icon as Andreas Frey died suddenly between Thursday evening (October 20, 2022) and Friday morning.
According to his company, FREY-Nutrition, the sports star died in his sleep. He is survived by his wife and their two daughters. Frey was best known for his stellar career which saw him place second at the PDI Night Of Champions 2006, behind Lee Priest.
He has also participated in the International Federation of Bodybuilding and Fitness (IFBB) and the National Amateur Body-Builders’ Association (NABB).
Who was bodybuilder Andreas Frey?
Born in Timisoara, Romania, on October 20, 1979, Andreas had just celebrated his 43rd birthday a few days before his death.
FREY Nutrition confirmed the death of its co-founder on October 22:
“It is with deep sadness that we have to announce the death of Andreas Frey, founder of FREY Nutrition, on the night of October 20 to 21. [He] died suddenly in his sleep. Our sympathy goes to his wife, Ina, and his daughters, Anna and Lisa.
The future bodybuilding star moved to Germany at the age of 6, where his grandmother resided. She was would have the main reason his family moved.
Bodybuilders typically start training in their late teens to early twenties, but Frey was a precocious bloomer. At 15, he participated in his first competition and won a bronze medal.
His career went from strength to strength, reaching record success in the mid-2000s. Andreas won countless competitions including the NABBA World Championship for two consecutive years in 2003 and 2004.
But the 43-year-old was renowned for coming second to Priest at the 2006 PDI Night Of Champions, who is dubbed Australia’s most accomplished bodybuilder.
A pectoral injury the following year marked the end of his professional career, during which he competed in 33 competitions.
Andreas is one of many bodybuilders who tragically died too young. Poland’s Paul Poloczek deceased in June at only 37 years old, and Mr Olympia Shawn Roden past in November 2021. He was 46 years old.
Frey is survived by his family, who will take over the business
Andreas is survived by his wife of 23 years. The couple famous their birthday on July 18 this year.
They are parents to two adorable daughters called Anna and Lisa. When he wasn’t spending time with his family, the bodybuilder promoted his brand of fitness supplements, which gained popularity in his native country. The business started after his retirement.
Ina is co-founder of FREY and will therefore take the helm of the company to pursue her husband’s vision.
