Introduction to Nolvadex
Nolvadex is a very common drug in the fitness and bodybuilding arena. This has confused a lot of people into thinking that the drug is a steroid while it actually isn’t. Nolvadex is classified as a selective estrogen receptor modulator (SERM) which basically makes it an estrogen antagonist. The compound will, therefore, work as an anti-estrogen in most parts of the body but not all. Studies have shown that in various organs, Nolvadex will also function as an estrogen agonist.
So, Nolvadex is not a steroid yet it is still quite popular in the bodybuilding industry; why is that? The anti-estrogen properties of Nolvadex make it one of the most used compounds in steroid cycles. This is because the drug really helps in fighting estrogen side effects caused by other steroids. Most athletes also include this drug in their post cycle therapy regimen. In this case, Nolvadex is used to help in restoring the production of natural testosterone.
History of Nolvadex
Nolvadex or “Nolva” is the brand name of a drug known as Tamoxifen Citrate. At some point, it was also known as AstraZeneca. This drug was developed in 1961 by the company ICI. The drug was developed to be used as a treatment option for breast cancer. Oncologists prescribed this drug to women who were at a predisposed risk of contracting breast cancer. It was also prescribed to ladies who already had breast cancer either in both or one of the breasts where it effectively helped to prevent the spread of the cancerous cells.
The effective anti-estrogen performance of the drug lured in fitness experts. This is simply because a big majority of the anabolic steroids used to come with severe side effects some of which are due to altered levels of estrogen. Therefore, fitness experts began recommending Nolvadex to be used alongside these steroids to counter the effects caused by estrogen. In other cases, the drug is used after each steroidal cycle. Here, it helps not just to combat estrogen effects but also to restore optimal testosterone production.
How does Nolvadex Work?
The way Nolvadex functions is really simple. Already you know that Nolvadex has both estrogen antagonist and agonist properties. So what happens is when you get this SERM into your system, it attaches itself to estrogen receptors. This means that the hormone estrogen will no longer be able to attach into these receptors and hence its actions in various parts of the body will cease or at least be reduced.
It is this working mechanism that makes Nolvadex so good in preventing the spread of breast cancer. As you may already know, certain types of breast cancer are usually fueled by estrogen. When Tamoxifen Citrate is attached to the estrogen receptors, these cancer cells will no longer be capable of using the receptors to spread across the breast tissue.
It is also important to note that Nolvadex helps to prevent gynecomastia; a very common side effect of most steroids. This helps in keeping the unpleasant “man-boobs” situation away thus leaving the athletes not just ripped but also physically attractive.
We also pointed out that in some parts of the body, Nolvadex may promote the functions of estrogen. One of such parts is the Liver and funny enough, the interaction of liver and the hormone estrogen is very beneficial. How so? Studies have shown that this interaction helps in keeping cholesterol levels at a very healthy level. Now, one of the many adverse reactions of using anabolic steroid is that they increase the levels of LDL (bad cholesterol) while decreasing the levels of HDL (good cholesterol). Therefore, by moving cholesterol levels to a healthy point, Tamoxifen Citrate helps to prevent the negative impact that most anabolic steroids have on cholesterol.
You probably already know that Nolvadex is a very popular drug used in PCT. One of the reasons for this is the fact that the drug can stimulate testosterone production in the body. How does it achieve this? According to research studies, using Nolvadex after a steroid cycle helps to prevent negative feedback stimulated by estrogen in the hypothalamus and pituitary gland. By doing so, the drug allows your pituitary gland to release luteinizing hormone and follicle-stimulating hormone, and these promote testosterone production in your body.
Side Effects of Using Nolvadex
Nolvadex is one of the most recommended SERMs for a reason. This potent drug delivers the desired results with minimal risk of side effects. This doesn’t mean that it is completely safe though. A couple of adverse reactions may still occur. It is also vital to know that the risk of these adverse reactions is higher in women than it is in men.
In extremely rare situations, Tamoxifen Citrate will result in severe medical complications such as:
- Pulmonary embolism
- Endometrial changes
- A spike in triglyceride levels
- A decrease in white blood cells
- Vaginal discharge or bleeding in women
These side effects are extremely rare, but it is essential to know that they can still occur. Talk to your physician as soon as you start noticing them.
We also have some less severe adverse reactions such as headaches, hot flashes, stomach upset, nausea, hair thinning and itching in the vagina.
Pregnant women or women trying/planning on getting pregnant should stay away from Tamoxifen Citrate. This drug can affect the fetus and the uteri.
You should also discuss your medical history and disclose other drugs you may be taking to your doctor before using Nolvadex. This drug can be hazardous when combined with other medications. For instance, Nolvadex should never be used alongside ridociclib, anastrozole or letrozole.
How to Use Nolvadex
For bodybuilders using Nolvadex for its anti-estrogen properties, 10-20 mg daily is usually enough. This should help you avoid gynecomastia and various other effects of estrogen. If the drug doesn’t deliver the desired results, most athletes typically end up using other alternatives such as an aromatase inhibitor.
When you are using Nolvadex in post cycle therapy, the recommended starting dose is around 40mg daily. This should be used for the first few weeks before reducing the dose to 20mg and then 10mg in the final weeks of PCT.
In using Nolvadex for PCT, it’s also important to know that the anabolic steroid you were using will determine when you should start taking this SERM and may also decide how long the PCT will last. If the steroid you were using had a large ester base, you’d have to wait for two weeks after your cycle before you start using Nolvadex. In case the steroid had a smaller ester base, you can begin taking Nolvadex three days after your cycle comes to an end.
Under no circumstance should you overdose on Nolvadex. This can lead to severe effects such as irregular heartbeat, shaking and unsteady walking. In case you miss a dose, don’t double it up with your next dosage. Just take it as soon as you remember, and if you remembered when it’s time for your next dose, then you’ll just have to skip the missed dose.
Where can I buy Nolvadex?
Nolvadex does not contain any steroidal compounds, and hence it is legal which means getting it is easy. Most pharmacies will have this drug, but you will need a prescription to get it. A lot of underground laboratories also produce this drug, but I will be very careful if I was you. Going down this dark path may lead you to contaminated and harmful compounds that will put your health in serious danger.
Nolvadex is one of the two popular SERMs in the fitness industry with the other drug being Clomid. Compared to Clomid, Nolvadex is not only more powerful, but it is also very safe. It, therefore, goes without saying that Nolvadex is the better option. It helps to restore testosterone production and will also be very useful in keeping adverse estrogen effects away while you are using your anabolic steroids.
